Super Size - Signature Popcorn.
“Super Size - Signature Popcorn” is a performance made by the artist Sylvia Riquezes, to take place in specific days and moments during the “Merril Lynch Arte Americas 2005” Fair.
Riquezes will prepare and share popcorn with the public of the Fair, distributing it in small packages having the words “Super Size” printed in huge letters as well as the artist’s signature. For the performance, the artist will wear a self-designed outfit, and as an element of the scenery, a Popcorn machine intervened by the artist. (Both articles are for sale).
The series “Signature Popcorn” refers, in an ironic way, to consumption within contemporaneousness. It pretends to attract the attention of the spectator and create a different level of consciousness of what is really happening around in life. This series points out the super consumption and the consumers’ degenerated desire for material commodities. It criticizes the need for brands and emphasizes the disproportioned sizes of material goods, therefore underlining the distortion suffered in the values of today’s societies.
